Harvest Party Celebrates Community
One of the ways in which Communitas has celebrated its 50th anniversary this year has been to encourage our homes and services to host a community event, inviting neighbours, friends, and families to celebrate with us.
In Abbotsford, the managers of several of the homes facilitated by Communitas decided to pool their resources and do something together. After some brainstorming, they decided to hold a Harvest Party.
Held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the event included a BBQ spread of burgers, hotdogs, and pakoras. A balloon artist created fun animals for children and a face painter created entertained children and adults alike. Each home took responsibility for an activity. One of the home offered henna and nail painting, while another gave people an opportunity to spin a wheel and win a prize. Another home organized mini-games.
A photo booth was organized by manager Justice Okplaugo.
“We used a commercial photo booth service, which set up at the event, took the photos, and then was able to create and print off a photo right on site,” Justice said.
More than 100 people attended including people we serve, staff, their families, people from other organizations, and the public.
Abigail Guenette also manages one of our homes and helped with organizing the event. She says it was a new experience for most of them and they learned a lot.
“It is definitely something I think we would do again in the future,” Abigail said.
Manager Hardeep Kaur agreed.
“Bringing everyone together, including family members, was a great experience,” Hardeep said. “To me, this event resonated with our values of community, relationship, and diversity.”
Edwin, who lives in the home Abigail manages, participated by hosting the spinning wheel of prizes table.
“I had a lot of fun,” he said.
