Recipe A Reminder Of Mom
There’s nothing like the smell of Christmas cookies coming out of the oven to fill a home with Christmas cheer. For Martin, baking cookies this week brought cheer to his day for a few reasons.
Martin’s mother used to bake Holiday Cookies – a special drop cookie packed with spices, nuts and tropical fruit. It was always one of his favourite cookies. Sadly, his mom passed away 6 years ago and her baking is one of the many things he’s missed about her.
“I thought, ‘I’d really love to eat those cookies again’,” he says.
Martin receives services through Communitas’ Community Living Program and Krista is Martin’s life skills worker. One of the skills that they work on together is cooking but Martin had never baked anything before, so Krista suggested that they try baking one of his mom’s recipes for Christmas. Martin searched through his recipe box and found his mother’s hand-written recipe for Holiday Cookies. He was excited to try baking them.
After visiting several stores to purchase all the ingredients, Martin and Krista spent an afternoon putting it all together.
“Martin did really well,” she confirms. “Baking the cookies seemed to make him really happy, he was chatty and joking with me the whole time. I tried one of the cookies when we were done and they were magnifique!”
Martin says it wasn’t as hard as he thought it would be and he’s so happy that they turned out so well. He is looking forward to sharing his baking with his brother and sister-in-law at Christmas.
“I’m very surprised that they turned out but they did turn out and I tasted one and they’re quite good,” he says. “I think my brother will really like them and that they will remind him of mom. I think my mom would be really proud of me.”
